What a great end to an amazing week! Grandparent’s Day was so much fun on Friday! The kids got to sit down with their grandparents and interview them about the differences in school when they were in 5th grade. I can’t wait to hear about the interviews in Community Circle on Monday. I have some great room parents that put a lot of effort into today’s snacks. Thank you so much!
The Week Ahead:
Religion:
Please have your child take the online religion test for chapter 3. That grade will go on the first quarter report card so please get it emailed to me ASAP.
On Monday, we are ready to start chapter four, The Calming of the Sea.
Math:
After a week of extra practice and studying, the kids took their math test on Thursday. They got their tests returned to them on Friday. The kids will be able to correct their errors on their test for half credit. The tests need to be returned by Tuesday.
We will start right back up with chapter three on Monday. Chapter three is over geometry. We will be measuring angles with protractors, using a compass, working with congruency, and exploring polygons. Expect a study link Monday-Thursday.
The kids are LOVING our new novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. We are ready for chapter 5 on Monday. The kids have been holding discussions and filling out their reading logs in literature circles. I will be grading their reading logs every five chapters. Feel free to read along with us so you can have book conversations with your child.

Literature Circles! |
Hopefully you and your child had time to decide on a topic for their October book report. Remember that this is a biography. The kids need to actually read a book and not just look up information on the internet. The rubric is in your child’s binder. Please email me if you have any questions over the magazine article project.
We will be completing a Scholastic News issue this week.
Time to start over with AR points for the second quarter! Because Where the Red Fern Grows is 12 points, the kids are required to get 20 points for the second quarter.
Social Studies:
We will continue to study Native Americans.
Science:
We will continue working with weather.
On Thursday, we will be taking a study trip to the Liberty Water Treatment Center. This will help the kids understand how we can reuse water that goes through the water cycle. We will be stopping at City Park for lunch, so your child will need a sack lunch and drink on Thursday. No soda, please.
Vocabulary:
Chapter 5 will be checked on Friday.
FYI:
- The school newsletter tells what each parent is asked to donate for the Penny Carnival. 5th grade parents are asked to bring in water or a small 6-pack of soda.
- Don’t forget to get your auction ticket!
- Report cards go home on Friday.
- Thank you for those of you who made it to the PTO meeting on the Tuesday. We had a great information session on our new bullying prevention program, Olweus. For those of you that could not make it to the meeting, there is a link on the St. James website that you can check out to get more information.
- The kids are out of uniform on Friday! The can wear St. Pius colors-blue/gold, St. James colors-blue/white, or a St. James football/volleyball jersey. There will be a short assembly on Friday at 10:20.
- Check out the newsletter to find out how you can help us get another Smart Board at St. James by just shopping at Hy-Vee!
Table Talk Question:
1. Talk to your kids about the book, Where the Red Fern Grows. Describe the main character, Billy, and make predictions.
2. If you were a Native American living in early America, which region would you live in and why? (Eastern Woodlands, Plains, Southwest, West, Pacific Northwest, or Arctic)
3. What did the kids think about the Liberty Water Treatment Plant? What was their favorite part? (the park doesn’t count J)
Have a great weekend!
