Newsletter 10-2-2011

We had a great week! It was such a great learning experience to visit Brett Anthony in the NBC Action News Weather Station. They loved the green screen and being on television! Brett also did some really cool experiments that explained cloud formation, tornadoes, warm/cold fronts, wind, and thunderstorms!

 The Week Ahead:

Religion:
The kids should have taken the online test for chapter 2 and sent me the results. We are working on chapter 3 in Faith First.

Math:
We will continue to work on chapter 2. We will be completing lessons 2.6-2.9. We will be focusing on estimation and multiplication of whole numbers and decimals.

Reading:
Where the Red Fern Grows will start this week! The kids are excited to start.

The kids have two weeks (until October 15) to get their 15 AR points.

I will be working on grading the book reports this week. They look really good! I handed out the rubric for the October book report on Friday.
There is a rubric on the top of the sheet and an explanation on the bottom half. The kids will be reading a biography and then creating a newspaper article over the person they are reading about. I know that we have a limited supply of biographies in the library. You may want to discuss this project with your child and see who they are interested in learning about. You may have to check out your book from Mid-Continent Library.

Science:
This week we are going to do some fun things with the water cycle and weather. I would like to make barometers this week, so PLEASE send in a can. If not, I will be eating A LOT of green beans this week. J

Vocabulary:
We will complete unit four next week.

FYI:
-Picture Retake Day is on October 5th
-No school on Friday, October 7th

Table Talk Questions:
1.      Who does your child want to read about for their October Book Report?
2.      What does a barometer measure and how does it work? How can you use it to know what kind of weather is approaching?
3.      Have the kids describe the character, Billy, from the book Where the Red Fern Grows.
